Putting the community into community gardens
Not only does a community garden provide the chance to grow your own produce and plants but what better way to get out in the environment, meet new people and try something new?


Demand for community gardens is increasing all around the country with over 70 registered community gardens in South Australia and over 700 in Australia. A community gardens provides lessons in sustainability while also being a fun way to get involved. Gardens can be communal or shared gardens, where the group shares the work and harvest or allotment style gardens, where people garden their own individual plots.


The City of Charles Sturt can also provide support in planning and developing a garden with the ongoing maintenance and management to be carried out by a garden committee for that location. (Conditions apply- more info below.


The benefits of a community garden are endless with Humans, animals and plant all reaping the rewards. They can help reduce negative environmental impacts by promoting sustainable agriculture. They also reduce food transportation costs and reduce water runoff while also providing habitats for local animals.


“It provides a great opportunity for people who have little or no yard to enjoy a new hobby, produce food or join in on community cooperation -which is a good thing, a healthy thing.” Says Michael O'Donnell, principal of Century 21 Western/Coastal real estate in Lockleys
